Material efficiency and substitution analysis

Resources are becoming increasingly scarce and must be used efficiently. For these processes, an optimisation in material efficiency – also through circular economy-based concepts such as re-use and recycling – as well as a substitution of certain materials play a key role. This also incorporates considerations on backward integration and the regulation anticipation of certain materials.

The objective is to establish fundamental substitution patterns, illustrate the potential of each and, with this, highlight – for the decision-makers in industry and society – on what level and in which period demand for replacement raw materials and new technologies will occur, also taking existing and future bottlenecks into consideration.
